THE BREAD GIRL

Illustrated Anthology – Published by Emirates Literature Foundation. Dubai, 2024.

A heartfelt illustration showing a little girl inside a bakery, gazing sadly through the window at the other children happily heading to school. The warm, nostalgic setting of the bakery highlights her longing to join her friends while she stays behind to help her father. Illustrated by Zarifi Haidar Marín (ظريفة حيدر).
A vibrant scene showing the little girl inside the bakery, working alongside another girl in school clothes, forming bread into the letters of the alphabet. The scene captures their playful interaction, but the mood shifts as the little girl's father enters, angry to see his daughter using the shop's flour for her creative play. Illustrated by Zarifi Haidar Marín (ظريفة حيدر).

“The Bread Girl” is one of the winning stories from the Voices of Future Generations competition for the Middle East, 2024. This story is part of The Young Voices of Arabia 5th Edition, an anthology featuring 21 stories written by children for children, professionally edited and translated, with illustrations by regional artists. The story follows a young girl who must work with her father in a bakery instead of attending school with the other children in her town. The illustrations are warm, simple, and nostalgic, with attention to contextual details that complement the narrative.

IIllustrating “The Bread Girl” was meaningful to me, as it resonated with my own youth experiences of helping my father in his bakery. Moreover, the commission came during the challenging times of the 2024 war in Lebanon, which added emotional depth to the creative process.
